Welcoming Future Event Pros To Our Office

One recent Friday we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of future colleagues from the Collins College of Hospitality Management at Cal Poly Pomona to our offices. We had a great time sharing our knowledge with the students on their field trip.
It was an educational experience for all of us!

Alisa Walsh, Director of Business Development:
"We had been invited by our friends at the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board to provide the students with a site visit of an event production company because we have our design and production studios in-house. Every event we produce is put together here, step by step, all in on place, in South L.A. It was an honor to participate and welcome this energetic and curious group of students."

In order to provide all 40 attendees with an in-depth and close-up experience during their 45-minute visit we organized them in three rotation groups.

Alisa: "Ted, Kristen and I gave the group an introduction to the production process from A to Z. Kate and Brynne offered students a tour of our decor and floral design studio. Carolyn and Max welcomed everyone to the warehouse where our team was working on the construction of customized set pieces.
We all participated in very lively Q&A sessions which also proved to be very informative for us."

Brynne, Kate, our office canine Beatrice, and Max present our Decor and Floral Design Studio.

Sasha Tani, Director of Destination Services at L.A. Tourism & Convention Board:
"The purpose of this site inspection day was to familiarize students with various supplier partners to understand the behind-the-scenes of executing an event. In addition, students got the opportunity to learn of different career paths in the Hospitality industry.
It was a pleasure bringing the next generation of event planners to EventWorks to showcase all the moving parts that go into producing large scale and special events. The students really loved seeing all the departments from sales, to floral design, to props, and all the people that it takes to make the final event come together."

Alisa Walsh: "It was very interesting and refreshing for us to discuss our work with such a motivated group and we gained new insight into our process by learning about it from an outside view. We got very interesting questions from the group, that resulted in discussions related to everything from the cost of events, sourcing creative ideas to work-life balance, a topic that was much on the mind of the students as our work schedule does not fit into a Monday-Friday 9 to 5 time frame. Future event producers need to know that it is more of a work-life integration instead of balance. But this industry is a lot of fun and very fulfilling to creative minds."

If you are interested in an event industry career, you should consider attending the Collins College!  Here a very short description:

With over 1,000 undergraduate students, the college is the second largest of its kind the country. Founded in 1973, it was the first hospitality management studies program in California and its thousand students make it the largest such school in the state. As of 2010, The Collins College of Hospitality Management is ranked third in the nation by restaurant executives. With over 1,000 undergraduate students, the college is the second largest of its kind in the country.

Thank you to Sasha Tani and the LATCB for including us in this program!

Warm regards,

Site Report From A Land Not Far Away: Terranea Resort

Hard at Work: Janet, Ted and Kristen
As Executive Producer Kristen Rensch put it: #ILOVEmyjob.
We just wrapped a series of events for an international client in a gorgeous location close to home: the beautiful Terranea Resort, the only ocean front resort in Los Angeles County.
We have worked here repeatedly in the last few years and we also love to come to meet friends at Nelson's for a weekend lunch.
Terranea Resort has very much to offer to the meetings & events industry.
Please read on.

Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes
This well-known aerial view speaks more than a 1000 words.
Terranea Resort occupies 102 acres of the most breathtaking ocean front in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Located only 20 miles, a 30-minute drive, from LAX International Airport, this full service resort is very accessible while it also provides absolute privacy and tranquility in Los Angeles County. The privacy and beauty may be reasons that celebrities love this place!
And Hollywood has come calling aplenty. Recent blockbusters filmed on the property include 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' 'The Aviator,' 'Pearl Harbor,' 'Charlie’s Angels,' 'Fun with Dick and Jane,' 'Savages,' and 'This is 40'. TV viewers will recognize it from multiple location shoots, including a romantic "The Bachelor" wedding.

The location is ideal for meetings and events because the resort offers all amenities, including board rooms, ballrooms, outdoor event spaces, its own 9-hole golf course, several outstanding restaurants, a long list of activities, full spa services, several pools and secluded beaches, all in one place.

Ted Bowers: "Our experience with the in-house staff speaks for itself. Everyone really goes above and beyond. The staff is amazing."
Welcome Reception at Nelson's
Nelson's was a great location for the Welcome Reception for our guests, most of whom had endured a long, overnight international flight. What a start to the meetings! Cocktails and California cuisine  with a backdrop of sunset over the ocean and mild ocean breezes.

Our event series took place in late March 2016. Our guests experienced sunshine and mild temperatures. Many attendees reported spotting grey whales right off the beaches as they migrate from Mexico to Alaska in Spring.

How Eco-Friendly is Terranea Resort?
Fact Sheet:

Natural Haven Terranea Resort, A Destination Hotel, retains the essence of the unspoiled beauty of California’s coast. The resort was meticulously designed with the utmost reverence to its native environment. Guided by the philosophy of ecological sustainability, the resort’s aesthetic embraces a continuous interplay with nature and the existing coastal habitat and Pacific Ocean. Every effort has been made to
protect and steward this unique environment on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, preserving one of Southern California’s most scenic and coveted coastlines for future generations.
Minimal Impact Terranea is dedicated to protecting the valuable coastal resources that define the Palos Verdes Peninsula and make Terranea one of the most valued natural locations in the world. From the beginning, Terranea Resort has been committed to minimizing its environmental footprint. Eco-friendly practices are featured
prominently throughout the resort, adhering closely to measures that protect open space, improve wildlife habitat and enhance local water quality. Today, Terranea occupies only one-quarter of its 102-acre site – allowing guests to enjoy more than 75 acres of natural landscape.

Additional Environmentally Friendly Measures:
• In October 2012, Terranea Resort collaborated with Waste Management (NYSE: WM) to expand its commitment to sustainability and green practices by including food waste recycling. With the new food waste recycling program, Terranea’s goal was to increase the amount of waste reused by 50 percent. Currently, Terranea’s waste management efforts divert 80% of the resort’s waste from landfills. Terranea boasts one of the most comprehensive recycling programs in the Los Angeles area.
• No land was removed from the area during the development of Terranea. Instead, existing structural and raw materials were recycled in the site preparation, including more than 65,000 tons of onsite stone that was quarried and crushed to utilize under roads and walkways.
• Approximately 45 mature trees, legacies of Marineland dating over 50 years old, were carefully boxed and preserved during construction and then replanted throughout the site as a tribute to the area’s history.
• Terranea employs natural irrigation and water treatment through a series of wet ponds and vegetated wetland channels called Bioswales. These wetlands enhance water quality and also serve as a habitat for native avian species. First flush rainfall collection systems called Storm Filters also reduce and treat the runoff of pollutants.
• The resort’s native plant palette features coastal species indigenous to Palos Verdes and the Channel Islands. The development team worked diligently to restore, protect and preserve the ecological balance of the area by replacing non-native plants with ones indigenous to the region. Each were locally cultivated and grown by the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy to reinforce biodiversity. Pesticides and fertilizers are limited to those which are either
organic in nature or pose no residual effect on the environment.
• All three sparkling resort pools are treated with saltwater in lieu of a fully chlorinated system. The process is both environmentally friendly and healthier for pool users.
• Terranea’s sustainable growing philosophy incorporates seasonal dining menus that feature local ingredients and organic, freshly picked produce and herbs from the Chef’s Garden and nearby Catalina View Gardens.
Natural Terranea Resort encourages guests to explore its unique ecology and Encounters embrace environmentally friendly practices through a variety of conservation programs as well as exciting and educational activities.
With more than 14 acres of natural habitat surrounding the resort, it is easy to observe the local fauna at Terranea. The resort offers many opportunities to view a range of wildlife in their natural environs. Guests can enjoy sights of everything from whale migrations to spotting the endangered El Segundo Blue Butterfly.
• Docent led tours guide visitors along the resort’s extensive walking, hiking and bird watching footpaths along the scenic Discovery Trail, part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula trail system. The tours help further the awareness of the land’s unique ecology, educating guests on the resort's coastal flora and fauna, like the California crabapple, a rare species that grows only on the Peninsula and Catalina Island.
• California Blue and Pacific Gray whales migrate the waters just 50 yards offshore and can be viewed almost year round from Terranea. The Pacific Gray Whale mesmerizes spectators with up to 2,500 coastal sightings a year. A one-of-a-kind volunteer program lets guests participate in the official
whale count.
• The Pointe Discovery activity center and adventure concierge specializes in unique and indigenous recreational excursions, ranging from horseback rides and ocean kayaking to tide pool treks through diverse marine habitat at the Terranea Beach Cove and even falconry.
• For guest enjoyment and in support of the local community, several
telescopes are set along Terranea’s coastal bluffs, to view the whales, sea lions, and dolphins continually present offshore. Proceeds from the coinoperated telescopes are donated to area non-profit environmental
organizations: The Palos Verdes Land Conservancy, Marine Mammal Care Center and Algalita Marine Research Foundation.
Unique Green Terranea Resort embraces the vision of Destination Hotels & Resorts’ Measures environmental initiative, Destination Earth, in decreasing energy and water usage, reducing waste, increasing recycling and composting, and purchasing local and organic food and beverages when possible.

In addition to these standards, Terranea is committed to innovative solutions that help inspire guests and develop a greater degree of environmental awareness.
Green Measures:
• Employee uniforms are made of bamboo or chemical free organic cotton, wool or hemp, and organic dry cleaning services are offered
• Hybrid and low emission vehicles are used to reduce carbon emissions, and carpool programs are encouraged for resort staff
• Dimmers, motion detectors, low-voltage devices and fluorescent bulbs are utilized to reduce total lighting
• Terranea’s golf tees are completely biodegradable
• Guestrooms offer biodegradable amenity containers and a voluntary reuse program for linens and towels
• Pointe Discovery offers an innovative Fun with Purpose program that
provides exciting activities that also promote and support the environment.
Programs include sea lion releases, plant-a-tree, edible landscapes and more.

Lucky guests may come across Marine Mammal Care Center staffers as they release rehabilitated sea lions back into the wild at Terranea Resort.

I know, I know, we are gushing! And No, they are not paying us to write this!
We really enjoyed our time at Terranea Resort — it’s especially wonderful when you get to work with wonderful clients (and if you are reading this T.Y. and K.U and N.Y - that means you).
Terranea Resort is a great place for meetings and events and we would love to work here with all of you!

Call us! Pretzels and beer at Nelson's on us!

Wishing you a wonderful week!

Event Report from Ontario, California: Honored To Produce The State of The City Event For This Fast Growing Destination

Southern Californian CVBs like to advertise the fact that visitors can snow ski and ocean surf in the same balmy winter day.

We just produced the
2016 State of The City Event for Ontario, a city
which is actually located so centrally that this statement becomes true!

The Ontario Convention and Visitors Bureau launched in 2012.  The Ontario International Airport Authority took control of the airport recently.
The tourism and meeting industry in Ontario is growing so fast it deserves to be called:
Boomtown USA!

Ontario, located half way between the Pacific Ocean and Palm Springs and a gateway to all areas of Southern California as well as Las Vegas, had a lot to celebrate during the 2016 State of The City.

The Greater Ontario CVB's work is showing great results.
In 2014 Ontario's hotel room occupancy growth rate was more than two times larger than in other Southern California destinations.
The Convention Center hosted 32 conventions in 2014, 47 in 2015, and has booked 64 in 2016.
Meeting numbers are equally impressive. 450 meetings were held here in 2015.
The forecast number of total visitors in 2016 is 553,000, an increase of 36% over the previous year.

The State of the City, a business and general community event, spanned three distinct phases in three locations inside the convention center over the span of 6 1/2 hours that celebrated successes and announced future developments and projects.

We were tasked to create a concept that included branding, excitement and social settings that encouraged business and mingling.

Sue Oxarart, Director of Communications:
"What I like about EventWorks is that they listen. They understood our vision and made it better. There was a lot of back and forth in pre-production. EventWorks provided the pizzazz."

The Event:

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016 from 3PM to 9:30PM.
Three Phases:
Sponsor Reception (150 guests)  -
General Reception (800 guests) -
Post Reception (950 guests).

Location: Ontario Convention Center
EventWorks Executive Producer: Brynne Peña

Our Vision: to create a focal point in the ballroom with a 20' wide fountain overhang ceiling treatment, Star Drop perimeter drape on a 80' circular truss with an inner lit central bar with LED column back bar for the final event, the 900 guest post reception.

Here you see it in action!

The Sponsor Reception:
Sue Oxarart: "The room was very dynamic. The decor was very visual."

Guests transitioned from the Sponsor Reception to the General Reception via a 40' video tunnel running cloud imagery in line with the evening’s theme: Reaching New Heights.

Cocktail tables featured event graphics and an 80’ circular star-drop curtain further enhanced the subtle sky & space theme of the evening.

The Post Reception featured a central bar, food stations, seating groups and DJ entertainment.

Featured Speaker "Queen of QVC" Lori Greiner of "Shark Tank" television fame inspired the guests with her truly motivational presentation!

What a pleasure to share positive economic and general news!
See you in Ontario!

Thank you for reading!
Warm regards,
